The Guide to Owning a Cockatoo

The Cockatoo
There are many varieties of Cockatoos. Some are not fit for pets so they will not be covered here. We will list those that are among the more common household companions.

Umbrella Cockatoo
(cacatua alba)
Location: Central and Northern Moluccan Islands and Indonesia.
Size:18in
Color:White with yellow on under side of wings.

A very loving an "cuddly bird", They are quite demanding for human attention and can be relentless in their attempts to receive it. They can be quite precocious and sharp as a tack. These birds are well known for learning tricks and perform well. Our U2 loves to play catch with a whiffle ball and will throw back to you. He loves to chase the ball on the floor and learned to put the ball through a hoop. He also enjoys cuddling under the covers in bed. They are less timid than other species and appear to do well with activity, however with activity come vocalization. Our's has learned to bark like the dogs when someone comes home.

The Umbrella's are also a talking bird with usually limited vocabulary. They are a little more difficult to understand, but they seem to know exactly what they are saying. Screaming is common and very loud. Care should be taken early to prevent routine screaming for attention. The behavior is difficult to break and is the single most common reason their owners give them up to the next unsuspecting person.

Their life span can reach 60 years or more, so most of these birds will end up with more than 1 home in it's lifetime. This is something to consider when choosing a companion bird.

These birds can be very destructive and loud. Their beaks are large and mighty. They can inflict disfiguring bodily harm or destroy personal property if the mood strikes. Proper toys would include 2x4 lumber to keep them occupied. Most pet store variety toys would not be adequate for this type of bird.

This is a pet that would not make a good roomy in an apartment setting! It could get you evicted!

More varieties coming soon!
