Wood Carvings- Birds of the world
| These
adorable wooden creatures are hand carved from a soft copol
wood in southern Mexico. The initial carving is with a pocket
knife, the piece is then dried, sanded, and finally painted
to meticulous detail. Each piece is hand signed (or initialed
for smaller pieces) by the artist. Sizes vary from 1-2 inches
to several feet tall/wide/deep. The native villagers have been
working in families for decades honing their skills. Each family
or artist has a distinct style, so many collectors will search
for specific artists, but others will prefer to collect certain
types of animals. No 2 figures will be the same because the
wood pieces collected define the type of figure the artist will
carve. Colorings will also vary. Below are some fine examples.

Some
pieces are shipped unassembled due to their long fragile body
parts. They are quite easy to put together. They can be glued,
but it is not necessary if they are displayed where they will
not be handled excessively. |
