Toys are an important part of a birds every day
life. They need to be able to "do things" to keep from
getting bored. A bored bird can start plucking feathers and exhibit
unwanted behaviors. Birds are attracted to color so bright colors
are important. Having a large selection available is also important.
As a bird gets bored of one toy you can switch them out for new
ones regularly. When you bring back an old one they will have
forgotten they'd seen it before (usually). With fun comes hidden
danger. Watch out for toys that become stringy as toes and nails
can become tangled. A small bird can gnaw it's foot off to free
itself, or break a wing, or cause substantial tissue damage. Another
thing to watch out for is the type of clasp/hanger/hook/tie on
that comes with the toy. This is even more important with larger
birds. A good toy can become a dangerous toy with the use of the
wrong hanger. We recommend replacing odd looking devices with
a simple screw on hanger. To close the hanger you must turn the
locking device onto the opposite end that is threaded. It's shaped
like an oval. At all cost avoid the old fashioned dog leash hooks.
The ones that you must press a bar to hook on. Toys that are easily
broken into small plastic or undigestible pieces can be harmful.
Eventually the crop will become blocked and the foreign toy parts
will need to be removed or worse. Birds like mirrors but do not
use breakable ones.
