What can I feed my bird?
We recommend brand name pellets if you are fortunate enough to acquire
a baby who has just weaned to pellets. Once a bird gets used to seed
mixes they will often reject pellets. Pellets are formulated to provide
complete nutrition for your pet, however it is a good idea to provide
some fresh fruits and veg each day. Birds will often be willing to eat
what's on your plate. It's a good idea to keep bakery items to a minimum.
Most foods are tolerated well by birds, but there are some hazzardous
foods! No onions, chocolate, avocado, caffeine (cola or coffee) . These
are all poisonous to birds. Avoid stringy veg (like celery unless it's
cooked).
What do birds seem to like best?
Pizza, spaghetti (with the sauce), rice, bread, sweet potato/yam cooked
or raw, carrots, peas, corn, bananas, fresh green beans. Lettuce is
good, but not iceberg as it has no nutritional value. Dandilion greens
and other leafy greens all fresh.
Of course birds like treats too! LaFeber
makes a wonderful line of treats that birds seem to love. There are
a wide variety of treats listed
here
Here are some brands that we recommend. Each brand offers food types
for every species normally kept as pets.
